Seven of the country’s top older horses, led by multiple graded stakes winners Mandaloun and Olympiad, are set to compete in Saturday’s Grade II, $750,000 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs.

Saturday’s Stephen Foster Day at Churchill Downs will get underway at 12:45 p.m. (all times Eastern) and feature the Stephen Foster along with a quartet of supporting stakes – the $350,000 Fleur de Lis (GII), $200,000 American Derby (Listed), $200,000 Tepin and $160,000 Kelly’s Landing Overnight Stakes. Post time for the Stephen Foster is 5:47 p.m.

The 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event toward the $6 million Classic held at Keeneland on Saturday, Nov. 5. The winner of the Stephen Foster will receive their entry fees paid to the Classic along with a travel stipend if they are located outside the state of Kentucky.

The Stephen Foster will be televised on NBC from 4-6 p.m. The two-hour broadcast also will feature the $160,000 Kelly’s Landing and $350,000 Fleur de Lis (GII) in Races 8-9, respectively.

In the Stephen Foster, Juddmonte’s Mandaloun, who won last year’s Derby following the disqualification of Medina Spirit, finished ninth in the $20 million Saudi Cup (GI) in his last start. Following the Saudi Cup, Mandaloun was delayed in his return to the U.S. but has been steadily working at Churchill Downs since May 8.

“He’s been doing great training over this track so it makes sense to target a race like the Foster that is at home,” trainer Brad Cox said. “We kept our options open but this race you don’t have to ship and can run out of your own stall.”

Since the race debuted in 1982, there have been no winners of both the Kentucky Derby and Stephen Foster.

Jockey Florent Geroux will be back aboard Mandaloun, who drew post No. 6.

Grandview Equine, Cheyenne Stable and LNJ Foxwoods’ Olympiad will return to Churchill Downs for the Foster where he last won the $500,000 Alysheba (GII) by 2 ½ lengths over Happy Saver and Title Ready on Kentucky Oaks Day. Olympiad returned to Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott’s Saratoga base following the Alysheba and has been training in upstate New York. The bay son of Speightstown is undefeated as a 4-year-old with open-length wins in the $500,000 New Orleans Classic (GII) and $250,000 Mineshaft Stakes (GIII). He arrived at Churchill Downs early Tuesday morning.

“We thought he was a nice horse since he was a 2-year-old,” Mott said. “He missed a lot of time in his 3-year-old year unfortunately. The patience that we were allowed to have with him and waited until he got right paid off. He’s a really good horse and competing at a top level.”

Olympiad will be ridden by Junior Alvarado from post 3. Alvarado has ridden Olympiad in seven of nine lifetime starts.

Another top older horse that was entered in the Stephen Foster is $1 million Oaklawn Handicap (GII) winner Last Samurai. Owned by Willis Horton, Last Samurai will compete under Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ name for the first time after being transferred from Dallas Stewart following the 1 1/8-mile race on April 23. Last Samurai has won four of 15 starts and, along with his four-length win in the Oaklawn Handicap, sports a stakes win in the $150,000 Poinsettia at Oaklawn. Veteran rider Jon Court has the mount from post 7.

CHC Inc and WinStar Farm’s Grade I winner Americanrevolution will attempt to avenge his fourth-place effort in last month’s $200,000 Blame in the Stephen Foster. The New York-bred Americanrevolution won last year’s $750,000 Cigar Mile (GI) as a 3-year-old. The Blame was Americanrevolution’s first start of his 4-year-old campaign. The Todd Pletcher trainee will be ridden by Luis Saez from post 2.

The field for the Stephen Foster is completed by Godolphin’s graded stakes-placed Proxy, Charles Fipke’s homebred Grade III winner Title Ready and Shortleaf Stable’s five-time winner Caddo River.

KENTUCKY OAKS WINNER SHEDARESTHEDEVIL TOPS GRADE II, $350,000 FLEUR DE LIS – Flurry Racing, Qatar Racing Limited and Whisper Hill Farm’s 2020 Longines Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) heroine Shedaresthedevil will be in search of her first victory this year in Saturday’s $350,000 Fleur de Lis (GII) at Churchill Downs.

The 1 1/8-mile Fleur de Lis is one of six stakes events on the Stephen Foster Day program. The spectacular 12-race card is headlined by the $750,000 Stephen Foster (GII) in Race 10. The other stakes on the program are the $200,000 American Derby (Listed), the $200,000 Tepin and the $160,000 Kelly’s Landing Overnight Stakes. First post is 12:45 p.m. and the Fleur de Lis will go to post at 4:35 p.m. as Race 8.

The Fleur de Lis is part of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Dozen where a portion of entry fees will be paid to the top three finishers toward the $2 million Distaff (GI) held on Nov. 5 at Keeneland.

Shedaresthedevil, who returned to training for her 5-year-old campaign after being purchased for $5 million at the Fasig Tipton November Sale. Aside from her win in the 2020 Oaks as a 3-year-old, the classy Daredevil mare also sports wins in the Clement L. Hirsch (GI), La Troienne (GI), Azeri (GII), Indiana Oaks (GIII) and Honeybee (GIII). Shedaresthedevil has not found the winner’s circle since last year’s $400,000 Locust Grove (GIII) at Churchill Downs. Jockey Florent Geroux will remain in the saddle for the Fleur de Lis and will break from post 5.

Chief among Shedaresthedevil’s rivals in the Fleur de Lis is Marylou Whitney Stables’ $150,000 Allaire DuPont Distaff (GIII) winner Super Quick. The speedy daughter of Super Saver was fleet-footed early in the Allair DuPont Distaff and spurted clear to a 14 ¼-length romp. Jockey Joe Talamo will have the mount on the Norm Casse trainee from post 1.

Stonestreet Stables’ $750,000 La Troienne (GI) winner Pauline’s Pearl will attempt to avenge her fourth-place finish in last month’s $200,000 Shawnee in the Fleur de Lis. Conditioned by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Pauline’s Pearl upset Shedaresthedevil in the La Troienne. The well-bred daughter of Tapit returned four weeks later in the Shawnee but finished fourth to 20-1 upset winner She’s All Wolfe. Joel Rosario will have the call from post 4.

The aforementioned She’s All Wolfe will return in the Fleur de Lis for owner Robert Zoeliner and trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel. The Oklahoma-bred daughter of Magna Graduate has eight lifetime wins but only two against open competition – the Shawnee and a conditioned allowance event last May at Churchill Downs. Jockey Francisco Arrieta will have the return call from post 2.

GRADE I WINNER RATTLE N ROLL WILL ATTEMPT TO REVERSE FORM IN $200,000 AMERICAN DERBY – Lucky Seven Stable’s classy 3-year-old colt Rattle N Roll achieved Grade I glory in last year’s $500,000 Breeders’ Futurity (GI) and will attempt to find the winner’s circle for the first time since that feat in Saturday’s $200,000 American Derby (Listed) at Churchill Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile American Derby was originally scheduled on turf but will now be run on the main track. The American Derby is one of five stakes events Saturday and is on the undercard of the $750,000 Stephen Foster (GII). The other stakes are the $350,000 Fleur de Lis (GII), $200,000 Tepin (Listed) and $160,000 Kelly’s Landing. Post time of the American Derby is 3:55 p.m. as Race 7. The first of 12 races will get underway at 12:45 p.m.

Trained by Kenny McPeek, Rattle N Roll recently finished third in the $225,000 Matt Winn (GIII). The chestnut son of Connect scored a 4 ¼-length win in the Oct. 9 Breeders’ Futurity under jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. Rattle N Roll will once again be ridden by Hernandez and drew post No. 9.

Other top contenders in the American Derby include WinStar Farm and Siena Farm’s recent allowance winner Kuchar and $200,000 Audubon Stakes winner Kitodan.

BANGO SEARCHES FOR EIGHTH CHURCHILL DOWNS VICTORY IN $160,000 KELLY’S LANDING OVERNIGHT STAKES – Tamaroak Partners’ Bango, a seven-time winner at Churchill Downs, headlines a field of nine sprinters that were entered in the $160,000 Kelly’s Landing Overnight Stakes.

The 6 ½-furlong Kelly’s Landing will go as Race 9 of 12 with a post time of 5:16 p.m. The Kelly’s Landing is one of five stakes events Saturday as part of Stephen Foster Day. The other stakes are the $750,000 Stephen Foster (GII), $350,000 Fleur de Lis (GII), $350,000 Wise Dan (GII), $200,000 American Derby (Listed) and $200,000 Tepin. First post is 12:45 p.m.

Trained by Greg Foley, Bango is one of only 27 documented horses to win at least seven starts at Churchill Downs. With a victory in the Kelly’s Landing, the 5-year-old son of Congrats would join Athenium, Bet On Sunshine, Canela, Crown Lease, Lord Rusty, Maxxed and Paden as eight-time winners at Churchill Downs. Ready’s Rocket is the all-time win leader beneath the historic Twin Spires with 11 wins followed by Barrister Siv, Can’tholdmeback and Herreno with nine.

Bango enters the Kelly’s Landing following a 2 ½-length victory in the $200,000 Aristides (Listed). Bango surprised many gamblers in the Aristides at odds of 10-1 but Foley was not one of them.

“I couldn’t believe he paid that much. He ran one bad race this year and his record at Churchill Downs wasn’t hidden by any means,” Foley joked.

Bango will once again be ridden by leading rider Tyler Gaffalione, who was aboard for his win in the Aristides. The duo will break from post No. 5.

Also entered in the Kelly’s Landing is last year’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint (GI) winner Aloha West. Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and trained by Wayne Catalano, Aloha West has not found the winner’s circle since his 11-1 upset win in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Aloha West made his first start of the year in the $750,000 Churchill Downs presented by Ford (GI) where he finished third behind Jackie’s Warrior and Reinvestment Risk. CHURCHILL DOWNS TO HOST JOCKEYS & JEANS STEPHEN FOSTER DAY – Churchill Downs will partner with Jockeys & Jeans for a public benefit toward the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund on July 2 as part of Stephen Foster Day.

Jockeys & Jeans will host more than 25 retired jockeys for their event including Hall of Famers Braulio Baeza, Bill Boland, Don Brumfield, Steve Cauthen, Pat Day, Earlie Fires, Sandy Hawley, Julie Krone, Chris McCarron, Craig Perret, Laffit Pincay Jr., Edgar Prado, Jose Santos and Gary Stevens.

Fans will be able to meet those riders and more with an autograph session in the Plaza from 3-4:15 p.m. There also will be a silent auction in the second floor of the Clubhouse beginning at 11:45 a.m. Admission gates will open at 11:30 a.m. and first post is 12:45 p.m.

Saint Liam (2005) won his running of the Classic at Belmont Park. Gun Runner (2017) won his Classic at Del Mar. Additionally, Fort Larned won the Classic in 2012 at Santa Anita and returned to his home base to win the 2013 Stephen Foster.

HORSE OF THE YEAR – Four horses used victories in the Stephen Foster as part of their résumés in Horse of the Year campaigns: Black Tie Affair (1991), Saint Liam (2005), Curlin (2008) and Gun Runner (2017). ENGRAVED KENTUCKY DERBY 148 TROPHIES TO BE PRESENTED SATURDAY – The connections from Team Rich Strike – owner Rick Dawson, trainer Eric Reed, jockey Sonny Leon and breeder Calumet Farm – will be at Churchill Downs on Saturday to accept their newly-engraved Kentucky Derby 148 trophies for the colt’s come-from-behind upset victory in America’s greatest race on May 7.
