Global View Nips Storming Inti at Wire to Win 23rd Running of Grade II American Turf

May 03, 2014

Glen Hill Farm's Global View caught Storming Inti in the closing strides to win the 23rd running of the $294,500 American Turf (Grade II) Presented by Ram Trucks for 3-year-olds by a neck.

Trained by Tom Proctor and ridden by Gary Stevens, Global View covered the1 1/16 miles on a firm Matt Winn Turf Course in 1:41.65. It was the third victory in the race for Stevens, who prevailed in 1998 on Dernier Croise (FR) and Unanimous Vote in 1995.

Craftsman (IRE), led the field of 10 through fractions of :23.68 and :47.99 with Storming Inti in closest pursuit. Global View raced near the back of the pack in the early going but began picking off horses on the far turn.

Turning for home, Storming Inti took over and appeared to be home free until the final yards when he was overtaken by Global View.

The victory was worth $173,461 and increased Global View's earnings to $274,988 with a record of 6-3-1-0.

Global View is a Kentucky-bred son of Galileo (IRE) out of the Storm Cat mare Egyptian Queen.

Global View returned $14, $6.60 and $4.40. Storming Inti, ridden by Javier Castellano, returned $5.40 and $3.60 with Quotient finishing 2 ¼ lengths back in third under Victor Espinoza and paying $4 to show.

Long On Value was another 1 ¼ lengths back in fourth and was followed in order by General Jack, Woodfield Springs, Picozza, Chief Barker (IRE) and Craftsman (IRE).

AMERICAN TURF QUOTES

Gary Stevens, rider of Global View (winner) – (Trainer) Tom (Proctor) just said, 'Enjoy yourself, have a good time. I want you to concentrate on just the finish. I don't care where you're at early.' He said, 'Just make sure you've got horse to finish up with.' It took me a while through the stretch the first time to wrangle him back, get him to settle. And once he did, it was just a matter of getting him out at the head of the stretch and letting him do his thing. He's got a powerful, powerful kick. I think he's going to be a top, top turf horse, I'm talking Grade I. He's still learning. He's a big colt. He's still developing right now. He's only going to get better.

Tom Proctor, trainer of Global View (winner) – 'He ran awful good last year and chased a good horse (Bobby's Kitten) in Tampa. His last race was on Polytrack. I'm like everybody else – I've got hope. He got a perfect trip. It's really good when there's not a horse within a length or two of you the first half mile of a race. That's means a lot. (What's next?) 'I'll just give him a bath and worry about that later.'

Javier Castellano, rider of Storming Inti (second) – 'He put me in a good spot. Then we just got outrun at the finish. But it was a good race for him. I'm very happy with his race.'

Victor Espinoza, rider of Quotient (third) – 'He ran a good race. He's a young horse with just a couple of races under his belt. He's learning. Today was good for him. I had a good trip and he got better.'

John Velazquez, rider of favored Picozza (seventh) – 'I thought my horse was in a good position, but when I asked him for run he didn't respond the way I had hoped. Hopefully next time, he'll run better.'
