Churchill Downs' Twin Spires to Glow Orange & White In Support of Neighboring DeSales High's Football Title Bid

Dec 04, 2013 John Asher

Starting Thursday evening, the historic Twin Spires of Churchill Downs will glow in shades of orange and white in honor of neighboring DeSales High School and the bid (“KHSAA”) by its football team to earn the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s 2-A High School Football Championship on Saturday in Bowling Green.

The campus of DeSales High at 425 W. Kenwood Drive is located less than four miles from the home of the Kentucky Derby, so Churchill Downs will highlight its neighbor’s school colors on the iconic Twin Spires in support of the school’s bid for its first state high school football championship.

DeSales will play defending 2-A champion Newport Central Catholic in the KHSAA 2A championship game at noon (EST) on Saturday at Feix Field at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium at Western Kentucky University.

It will be the third trip to a state championship game for the Colts, who are seeking the school’s first state title. DeSales was the Kentucky 2-A football runner-up in 2009. Newport Central Catholic has earned two of the last three state 2-A football championships.

The Twin Spires will glow orange and white in support of Churchill Downs’ South Louisville neighbor Thursday evening through Sunday, when the lighting of the Twin Spires will return to its green and red holiday theme.
