Right to Vote Rallies in Sunday Feature; Moreira Collects First U.S. Victory

Right to Vote, runner-up to Mark Valeski in last year’s Peter Pan (Grade II), rallied in midstretch and then outdueled favored Golden Frontier to win the $51,750 Sunday afternoon feature at Churchill Downs by one length.

Trained by Ron Moquett and ridden by Rosie Napravnik, Right to Vote covered the 6 ½ furlongs on the fast main track in 1:16.89.

B J D Thoroughbreds LLC’s Right to Vote, most recently ninth in the Alysheba (GII) on Kentucky Oaks Day, is a 4-year-old dark bay or brown son of Political Force. He earned $32,400 for Sunday’s victory and improved his bankroll to $188,804 with a record of 3-2-2 from 10 starts.

Right to Vote returned $6.80, $3.60 and $2.80. Golden Frontier, under Greta Kuntzweiler, returned $3.60 and $2.80 with Indisputable under Brian Hernandez Jr. another 1 ¼-lengths back in third and returning $4 to show. 

In Sunday’s finale, jockey Joao Moreira scored his first U.S. win aboard 25-1 longshot Princess Millie. Moreira, a native of Brazil and a champion jockey in Brazil and Singapore, will ride 5-2 morning line favorite Judy the Beauty in Monday’s $100,000-added Winning Colors (GIII) for owner-trainer Wesley Ward.

The Winning Colors will go as Race 10 on Monday’s special 11-race Memorial Day program at 5:30 p.m. (all times Eastern) and post time for the first race is 12:45 p.m.

All active and retired members of the United States armed forces will be admitted free of charge with proof of identification. Also, track bugler Steve Buttleman will perform patriotic melodies following the “Call to the Post” for each race.
