Good Deed Romps to Victory in the Unbridled Sidney

May 11, 2013 Gary Yunt

Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein’s homebred Good Deed, making her turf debut, took the lead out of the gate under Shaun Bridgmohan and cruised to a 4 1/4-length victory over Palazzo Babe in the $64,418 Unbridled Sidney for fillies and mares Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs.

The win was the fifth consecutive victory of the afternoon for Bridgmohan to give him 15 wins for the meet and pass Joel Rosario for the leading rider. It also gave Bridgmohan a victory in all three runnings of the Unbridled Sidney, having scored in 2011 with Little Polka Dot and last year with Wild About Marie.

“With her natural speed, I just let her put herself in the race and just go from there,” Bridgmohan said. “It was all her.

“All the horses showed up to run and it’s fantastic when they show up and run. All I have to do is keep them out of trouble.”

Good Deed turned back an early challenge from The Last Meow and led the field of eight through fractions of :21.99 and :45.13.  Good Deed kicked clear at mid-stretch and completed the five furlongs on a Matt Winn Turf Course labeled as “good” in :57.37.

It was the first Churchill Downs stakes victory for trainer Steve Margolis, who has saddled 129 winners beneath the Twin Spires.

“I’m glad we finally got it, especially for one of Richard (Klein)’s horses,” Margolis said. “I’m happy for Richard and his family and Shaun, my main guy, and the whole team. It’s real special.”

Good Deed is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Broken Vow out of the Mt. Livermore mare Hidden Assets. The victory was worth $39,660 and improved Good Deed’s bankroll to $245,803 with a record of 11-6-1-0.

Good Deed returned $7.80, $3.80 and $3.40. Palazzo Babe, ridden by Rosie Napravnik, returned $3.60 and $2.80 with Formal Plan finishing two lengths back in third under Jon Court and returning $5 to show.

Favored Holiday for Kitten was another three lengths back in fourth and was followed in order by Sedecrem, Bounding Bi, The Last Meow and My Due Process.

Racing continues Sunday with an 11-race program that begins at 12:45 p.m. (EDT).
