'All Others' Heavily Favored Over Pletcher Quartet on Derby Futures Day 1
Feb 09, 2013 John Asher
A busy opening day of betting in the first Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) pool of 2013 ended with the “All Others” (#24) wagering interest in its expected spot as heavy favorite, but the next four slots on the odds board were filled by horses that hail from the powerhouse stable of trainer Todd Pletcher.
The mutuel field, the 9-5 morning line favorite that consists of all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses in the pool, was a strong 6-5 bettors’ choice when opening day wagering closed late Friday evening. After that came a parade of Pletcher-trained horses that was headed by unbeaten Verrazano (#20), who was the individual KDFW Pool 1 choice at 7-1. He was followed by reigning 2-year-old champion Shanghai Bobby (#17) and Withers (GIII) winner Revolutionary (#16), both at 8-1, and CashCall Futurity (GI) winner Violence (#21), who was a 9-1 risk at the end of the opening session of the three-day pool.
The Pletcher quartet was followed by Sham (GIII) winner Goldencents (#9) at 10-1, Holy Bull (GIII) winner Itsmyluckyday (#11) at 21-1 and Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner Flashback (#7) at 22-1.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager offers racing fans an opportunity to bet on potential contenders for the famed “Run for the Roses” well in advance of the race at odds that could be significantly more attractive than the prices available Kentucky Derby Day. The $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) will be run for the 139th consecutive year at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4.
A total of $178,437 was wagered during Pool 1’s opening day at racetracks, off-track betting centers and online at TwinSpires.com and other advance deposit wagering outlets. The total includes $157,136 in win betting and $21,301 wagered in the exacta pool. Wagering will resume at noon (all times Eastern) on Saturday and betting will conclude at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Each Kentucky Derby Future pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, which is available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1-minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the Derby Future Wager, but betting on an individual horse will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby.
Information on the Kentucky Derby is available online at the official event Web site at www.KentuckyDerby.com and KDFW real-time odds will be presented on that site throughout each three-day betting pool.
