'All Others' The Overall Choice, Princess Arabella, Captivating Lass Top Individuals in Oaks Futures

Mar 05, 2012 John Asher

The “All Others” (#24) betting interest was the overall bettors’ choice following the opening day of Churchill Downs’ 2012 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (“KOFW”), but the inexperienced but impressive Princess Arabella (#18) and steady stakes veteran Captivating Lass (#5) emerged as the favored individual 3-year-old fillies in the three-day pari-mutuel futures pool.

Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia had installed the mutuel field, or “All Others”, as a strong 3-1 favorite in his morning line odds for the only Kentucky Oaks Future pool of 2012.  That wagering interest, which includes all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual horses in the pool, remained a solid 9-2 choice when the KOFW’s opening day betting wound to a close late Friday evening.

Peachtree Stable’s Princess Arabella registered a mild surprise when she joined Darley Stable’s consistent stakes veteran Captivating Lass as 8-1 co-second choices and the pool’s favored individual fillies.  The Bob Baffert-trained Princess Arabella has yet to face stakes competition while easily winning the first two races of her career, but she ended Friday’s betting well below her morning line odds of 15-1. Captivating Lass, the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained winner of Aqueduct’s Busanda Stakes, had also been a 15-1 shot in Battaglia’s morning line.

Kentucky Oaks Future wagering is scheduled to resume at noon (all times Eastern) Saturday at North American racetracks and off-track betting facilities, and at TwinSpires.com and other online wagering platforms.  Betting on the Oaks pool will conclude on Sunday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. – 30 minutes after its companion Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager wraps up its three-day run.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, now in its ninth year, offers fans an opportunity to wager on possible contenders for America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies weeks in advance at odds that could be more attractive than those available on the day of the 138th running of the $1 million Kentucky Oaks (GI), which is set for Friday, May 4, at Churchill Downs. The Oaks Future bet is a $2 minimum wager, with both win and exacta betting offered.

Kentucky Oaks fans wagered $10,926 during the opening session of the three-day Oaks Future pool.  The total included $7,977 wagered to win and $2,949 in exacta bets.

Other 3-year-old fillies that attracted solid support on the KOFW pool’s opening day included Spinaway (GI) winner and Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) runner-up Grace Hall (#10, 9-1), Golden Rod (GII) winner On Fire Baby (#17, 11-1), unbeaten allowance winner Zo Impressive (#23, 11-1), Pocahontas (GII) runner-up And Why Not (#2, 14-1) and Rachel Alexandra (GIII) winner Summer Applause (#20, 15-1).

Real time odds and other information on the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager is available at the official event Web site at www.KentuckyOaks.com.
