'All Others' Heavily Favored Over Grace Hall, Summer Applause in Oaks Futures

Mar 01, 2012 John Asher

For the second consecutive year America’s reigning champion 2-year-old filly is missing from the 24 wagering interests in Churchill Downs’ lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (“KOFW”) pool, a development that has left “All Others” (#24) as a strong early favorite over a wide-open group of 23 promising 3-year-old fillies included in the three-day betting pool that opens on Friday, March 2.

In a scenario similar to last year’s injury-related absence of unbeaten juvenile filly champion Awesome Feather from both the Future Wager and the Kentucky Oaks (GI), unbeaten 2011 2-year-old filly champion My Miss Aurelia has not returned to training at three and will not be a wagering interest in this year’s lone KOFW pool, The void created by her absence prompted Churchill Downs’ oddsmaker Mike Battaglia to install the mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual horses in Pool 1, as the heavily favored  3-1 betting choice in his morning line odds.  Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) runner-up and Spinaway (GI) winner Grace Hall (#10), was next at 10-1 despite an upset loss to longshot Yara last week in her 2012 debut in Gulfstream Park’s Davona Dale (II).  Summer Applause (#20), winner of the Rachel Alexandra (GIII) at Fair Grounds, is next at 12-1.

Wagering in the year’s only Kentucky Oaks Future Wager Pool, which runs concurrent to its companion Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, opens at noon (all times Eastern) on Friday at North American racetracks, off-track betting facilities and at TwinSpires.com and other online wagering platforms.  Betting on the Kentucky Oaks Future pool will conclude at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 30 minutes after the Derby pool closes.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, now in its ninth year, offers fans an opportunity to wager on possible contenders for America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies weeks in advance of the event at odds that could be more attractive than those available on the day of the 138th running of the $1 million Kentucky Oaks (GI), which is set for Friday, May 4 at Churchill Downs. The bet is a $2 minimum wager, with both win and exacta betting offered.

Kentucky Oaks fans wagered $92,902 during the three-day KOFW pool in 2011, including $29,098 in exacta bets.  Peachtree Stable’s Plum Pretty was not among individual wagering interest in that pool, so backers of the “All Others” interest were rewarded with a payour $21.80 for a $2 wager following Plum Pretty’s victory in the 137th Oaks.

Plum Pretty was saddled by two-time Kentucky Oaks-winning trainer Bob Baffert, who is represented by three individual fillies in the 2012 Oaks Future bet: Princess Arabella (#18 at odds of 15-1), Eden’s Moon (#9, 15-1) and Mamma Kimbo (#15, 20-1).  Others that could attract support during the three-day pool include Golden Rod (GII) winner On Fire Baby (#17, 15-1); Busanda winner Captivating Lass (#5, 15-1); unbeaten Santa Ynez (GII) winner Reneesgotzip (#19, 15-1), and surprising Davona Dale (GII) winner Yara (#22, 20-1).

Wagering interests in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager were chosen by a panel that includes Brisnet Marketing Director Ed DeRosa; Brad Free and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form; and John Asher, vice president of Racing Communications at Churchill Downs.
