(November 6, 2008) – Scarlet Stable’s Canela remained perfect on the Matt Winn Turf Course by romping to a 5 1/4-length victory in Thursday’s featured $49,940 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana Purse at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Julien Leparoux, Canela took the lead out of the gate, surrendered it in the run down the backstretch to longshot Revival Ridge, then spurted clear again at the head of the stretch and drew away for his fourth victory in four starts on the grass at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Mike Maker, Canela completed the 1 1/8 miles over firm turf in 1:47.92 and returned mutuels of $7.80, $4.40 and $3.60. Barastraight, ridden by Miguel Mena, rallied for second to return $9.80 and $7.20 with Sidcup finishing another head back in third under Corey Lanerie to pay $6.60 to show.

The victory over eight rivals was the 15th career tally in 41 starts for Canela, a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of El Corredor out of the Nijinsky II mare Najmah and was worth $33,148 to raise Canela’s career earnings to $355,597. It also marked the third win from three starters for the Scarlet Stable of Rose Barney at the current meet.
