'All Others' Favored Heading Into Oaks Futures Finale; Princess Arabella, Grace Hall Close Behind

Mar 05, 2012 John Asher

Betting on Churchill Downs’ 2012 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (“KOFW”) heads into its final day on Sunday with the Mutuel Field (#24), or “All Others,” maintaining its role as the lukewarm fan favorite, but promising 3-year-old fillies Princess Arabella (#18) and Grace Hall (#10) are close behind and On Fire Baby (#17) and Eden’s Moon (#9) gained support in Saturday’s wagering.

The Mutuel Field, which includes all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual horses in the Oaks Future Pool, was a narrow 5-1 bettors’ choice when the wagering during the second of the pool’s three days concluded Saturday evening.  But support remained strong for Peachtree Stable’s unbeaten Princess Arabella, who is awaiting her stakes debut for two-time Kentucky Oaks-winning trainer Bob Baffert, and the Anthony Dutrow-trained stakes veteran Grace Hall, the winner of the Spinaway (GI) and runner-up to unbeaten 2-year-old filly champion My Miss Aurelia in last fall’s Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) at Churchill Downs.  Princess Arabella and Grace Hall were the Oaks Future pool’s 7-1 co-second choices and favored individuals as of late Saturday evening.

Also making a move on Saturday was Golden Rod (GII) and Pocahontas (GII) winner On Fire Baby, a 15-1 risk in Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia’s Oaks Future morning line whose odds drifted down to 9-1 during Saturday’s betting.  Another strong mover was the Baffert-trained Eden’s Moon, who made a successful stakes debut in Saturday’s Las Virgenes (GI) at Santa Anita.  The daughter of Malibu Moon was a 20-1 risk when Saturday’s betting opened, but her odds fell to 13-1 after she scored her second win in three outings in the Las Virgenes.  Close behind were unbeaten Zo Impressive (#23, 16-1) and Las Virgenes runner-up Reneesgotzip (#19, 17-1).

The last of three days of 2012 Kentucky Oaks Future wagering is scheduled to open at noon (all times Eastern) Sunday, March 4, at North American racetracks and off-track betting facilities, and at TwinSpires.com and other online wagering platforms.  Betting on the Oaks pool will conclude on Sunday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. – 30 minutes after its companion Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager finishes its three-day run.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, now in its ninth year, offers fans an opportunity to wager on possible contenders for America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies weeks in advance at odds that could be more attractive than those available on the day of the 138th running of the $1 million Kentucky Oaks (GI), which is set for Friday, May 4, at Churchill Downs. The Oaks Future bet is a $2 minimum wager, with both win and exacta betting offered.

Kentucky Oaks fans have wagered $35,814 during the first two days of the pool.  That total included $26,143 wagered to win and $9,671 in exacta bets.
