'All Others', Union Rags Favored On Opening Day of Derby Futures Pool 2

Mar 03, 2012 John Asher

Fountain of Youth (Grade II) winner Union Rags (#23) attracted strong support from Kentucky Derby fans across North America during Friday’s first of three days of betting in the second pool of Churchill Downs’ 2012 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”), but the “All Others” (#24) wagering interest ended the day in a familiar spot as a narrow favorite.

The mutuel field betting interest, or “All Others,” includes all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses listed among the pool’s 24 wagering interests, and it was a narrow 2-1 favorite when Friday’s opening day of KDFW Pool 2 betting concluded late Friday evening.   But the once-beaten Union Rags, trained by Michael Matz, remained the clear individual favorite at 3-1 and at the end of the day was the only other betting interest with single-digit odds.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager annually offers fans opportunities to bet on candidates for the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I), America’s greatest race and one of the world’s premier sporting events, well in advance of the renewal of Churchill Downs’ famed 1 ¼-mile classic for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds.  Future Wager bettors will receive odds that are in place at when Pool 2 wagering concludes on Sunday at 6 p.m. (all times Eastern), and those odds could be significantly higher and more attractive than those available on the same horses on Kentucky Derby Day.

The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 5 at Churchill Downs.

Kentucky Derby fans wagered $60,955 in Friday’s Pool 2 activity, with $46,113 in win bets and $14,842 in exacta wagers.  Betting in the pool is scheduled to resume at noon Saturday at racetracks and off-track betting centers, and through TwinSpires.com and other online wagering platorms.

While Union Rags was the clear fans’ choice to win the Kentucky Derby in Friday’s early pool betting, reigning 2-year-old champion Hansen (#11) gained solid support and ended the day as the pool’s third choice at odds of 12-1.  The Mike Maker-trained champion handed Union Rags the only loss of his career in last fall’s Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) at Churchill Downs. Hansen, who is coming off his first career loss in a runner-up finish to Algorithms in the Holy Bull (GIII) at Gulfstream Park, is scheduled to run in Saturday’s $400,000 Gotham Stakes (GIII) at 1 1/16-miles at Aqueduct.

Other 3-year-olds that received solid interest from Kentucky Derby fans during Friday’s opening day KDFW Pool 2 betting included Risen Star winner El Padrino (#7, 16-1), Norfolk (GI) winner Creative Cause (#18, 18-1), Withers (GIII) winner Alpha (#1, 19-1), Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) winner Gemologist (#10, 23-1), Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (GI) winner Dullahan (#6, 25-1), and impressive allowance winner Fed Biz (#9, 26-1).

Bets in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which offers win and exacta bets, are $2 minimum wagers, with $1 exacta boxes and wheels also available.   There are no refunds on any wager placed during a KDFW pool.

Final Pool 2 odds, exacta payouts, and other information on Kentucky Derby Future Wager are available at the Kentucky Derby’s official event Web site at www.KentuckyDerby.com.
