'All Others', Union Rags Hold Steady in Derby Futures, But Hansen Surges After Gotham Win

Mar 04, 2012 John Asher

Fans of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) throughout North America continued solid support of the “All Others” (#24) betting interest and individual favorite Union Rags (#23) during the second of three days of betting in Pool 2 of Churchill Downs’ 2012 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”), but fans of reigning 2-year-old champion Hansen (#11) were buoyed by his impressive victory in Saturday’s Gotham Stakes (GIII) and the odds on America’s reigning 2-year-old champion dropped after that effort.

The mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual Pool 2 betting interests, remained the Pool 2 favorite at 5-2 heading into Sunday’s third and final day of future betting.  Fountain of Youth (GII) winner Union Rags remained a clear second choice at 4-1, but odds on reigning 2-year-old champion and  Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) winner Hansen tumbled after the Mike Maker-trained colt rebounded from his first career loss with a strong victory in Saturday’s $400,000 Gotham at New York’s Aqueduct.

Hansen’s odds stood at 12-1 at the end of Friday’s opening day of KDFW Pool 2 wagering, but was the pool’s third choice at 8-1 when betting drew to a close late Saturday evening.

Through two days of KDFW Pool 2 betting Kentucky Derby fans had wagered $181,068.  That total included $139,298 in win wagers and $41,770 in exacta bets.  Betting on the final day of the pool will open at noon (all times Eastern) on Sunday, March 4, at racetracks and off-track betting centers, and through TwinSpires.com and other online wagering platforms.  Derby Future wagering will conclude Sunday evening at 6 p.m.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager annually offers fans opportunities to bet on candidates for the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby, America’s greatest race and one of the world’s premier sporting events, well in advance of Churchill Downs’ famed 1 ¼-mile classic for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds.  Future Wager bettors will receive odds that are in place at when Pool 2 wagering concludes, and those odds could be significantly higher and more attractive than those available on the same horses on Kentucky Derby Day.

The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 5 at Churchill Downs.

Other horses that have attracted strong support through the Kentucky Derby Future Pool’s first two days include Risen Star (GIII) winner El Padrino (#7, 16-1); Withers (GIII) winner Alpha (#1, 17-1); Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (GI) winner Dullahan (#6, 21-1); Sham (GIII) winner Out of Bounds (#17, 23-1); and a trio of 24-1 shots in Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner I’ll Have Another (#12), Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) winner Gemologist (#10) and the Bob Baffert-trained allowance winner Fed Biz (#9).

Bets in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which offers win and exacta bets, are $2 minimum wagers, with $1 exacta boxes and wheels also available.   There are no refunds on any wager placed during a KDFW pool.

Real time Pool 2 odds, exacta payouts, and other information on Kentucky Derby Future Wager are available at the Kentucky Derby’s official event Web site at www.KentuckyDerby.com
