'All Others', Verrazano Top Derby Futures, Vyjack Gains

Mar 03, 2013

There was no change in the top two positions on Churchill Downs Racetrack’s odds board after the second day of betting in Pool 2 of the 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”), but odds on unbeaten Vyjack (#23) dipped after his impressive victory in the Gotham (Grade III) at Aqueduct, Saturday’s major prep for the 139th Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI).

The Mutuel Field (#24), also known as “All Others”, was a strong 3-1 bettors’ choice at the end of the second of three days of Kentucky Derby Future betting, while unbeaten Verrazano (#22) remained the favored individual at 9-1. While there was no change in the position for those Derby Futures betting interests, Vyjack’s odds tumbled to 14-1 by the late-evening  close of Saturday’s betting. Vyjack had been a 23-1 risk at the end of Friday’s opening day of Pool 2 betting.

Wagering on the third and final day of KDFW Pool 2 is set to resume at noon (all times Eastern) at racetracks and OTB’s across North America and online at www.TwinSpires.com and other advance deposit wagering platforms.  Betting in the pool will conclude at 6 p.m.

Kentucky Derby fans have wagered $181,053 through the first two days of Pool 2.  The two-day total includes $43,656 in exacta wagering.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager offers racing fans an opportunity to bet on potential contenders for the famed “Run for the Roses” well in advance of the race at odds that could be significantly more attractive than those available in betting on Kentucky Derby Day.

The $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby will be run for the 139th consecutive year at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4.

The “All Others” wagering interest, which includes all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses in KDFW Pool 2, was the strong 3-1 favorite in oddsmaker Mike Battaglia’s Pool 2 morning line odds. Odds on Verrazano, one of six KDFW Pool 2 wagering interests trained by Todd Pletcher, dropped slightly from Friday’s 10-1 closing price.

Close behind Verrazano after Saturday’s betting was Fountain of Youth (GII) winner Orb (#11), who stood at odds of 11-1 at the end of Saturday’s betting.  He was followed at 12-1 by Revolutionary (#15), the Pletcher-trained Withers (GIII) winner, and a trio of 13-1 risks in reigning 2-year-old champion Shanghai Bobby (#17), Holy Bull (GIII) winner Itsmyluckyday (#8) and the Bob Baffert-trained Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner Flashback (#6), one of five Baffert trainees in the pool.

Each Kentucky Derby Future pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, which is available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1-minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the Derby Future Wager, but betting on an individual horse will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby.
