Churchill Downs Horticulture Team Volunteers Landscaping for The Center for Women and Families

Dec 11, 2020 Churchill Downs Incorporated

Earlier
this week, members of the horticulture team at Churchill Downs Racetrack spent
the morning volunteering to assist with landscaping at the Louisville nonprofit
The Center for Women and Families (CWF). Churchill Downs Director of
Horticulture Matt Bizzell led the efforts, which took place the morning of
December 9 and saw team members Gary Leuenberger, Cindy Levett, Vicky
Hutchinson, Dave McQuerry, Tom Williams, Tom Duke and Eric Cassell come
together to help this very important community organization.

Churchill
Downs has a longstanding relationship with CWF, so when the opportunity arose,
Bizzell was moved to take action. He says his team has worked there in the past
on other projects, and it's because of his belief in their mission that they
are always so eager to assist when needed.

While
on site, Bizzell and his team gave the inner courtyard a landscaping makeover.
Due to the location of the courtyard, Bizzell says that he and those who came
with him had to haul tools and equipment through the facility to get to the
courtyard and then take all debris, leaves and trimming back through the
building. With all the yard waste and trash they removed, the team was able to
fill one dumpster and still have enough for a full truckload back to dispose of
at the Churchill Downs greenhouse.

'I
am very proud of my crew,' said Bizzell. 'They are always eager to
help others and work hard at whatever task comes their way.'

The
Center for Women and Families provides trauma-informed advocacy and support for
individuals, families and communities affected by intimate partner violence and
sexual assault. They mitigate the impact of trauma by building resiliency and
reducing risk factors at all levels. They are guided by a strong grassroots
feminist history, and a commitment to social and economic justice. They
co-create violence free lives, families, and communities.
