Churchill Downs Jockeys, All-time Win Leader Day to Visit Kosair Children's Hospital Friday, June 28

Jun 27, 2013 John Asher

Many of the brightest riding stars of the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs Racetrack (“CDRT”) – including three-time Kentucky Derby winner Calvin Borel, current rider leader Shaun Bridgmohan, 2012 Spring and Fall leading jockey Corey Lanerie and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Brian Hernandez Jr. – will be joined by Hall of Famer Pat Day, the track’s all-time win leader, when the jockeys travel to Louisville’s Kosair Children’s Hospital for their annual visit with young patients and their families on Friday, June 28.

The riding stars will assemble at Churchill Downs following Friday’s training hours and will board a shuttle at approximately 10:30 a.m. (all times EDT) bound for the hospital, which is located at 231 E. Chestnut Street.  The shuttle is expected to arrive at the hospital at approximately 10:45 a.m. The jockeys will gather in the first floor reception area of Kosair Children’s Hospital before breaking up into teams led by hospital staff to meet and visit with patients and families on several floors of the hospital.

Media coverage of the annual visit by the jockeys to Kosair Children’s Hospital is welcomed. All interested media should enter the hospital through its main entrance on E. Chestnut to meet with the riders, CDRT President Kevin Flanery and Kosair Children’s Hospital representatives and, if they wish, join groups of riders on their tours.

More than a dozen jockeys, all of whom will be wearing racing silks, are expected to participate in the annual hospital visit. Others expected include: Jon Court, Alan Garcia, Jesus Castanon, Ricardo Santana Jr., Joe Rocco Jr., Joe Johnson, Greta Kuntzweiler, Marcelino Pedroza, Ramon Vasquez, Roberto Morales and C.J. McMahon.

Four Churchill Downs jockeys will be unable to participate because of travel arrangements for riding assignments in stakes races scheduled Friday evening at Iowa’s Prairie Meadows. That group includes 2012 Kentucky Oaks winner Rosie Napravnik, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Robby Albarado, Miguel Mena and Leandro Goncalves.

For more than a century, Kosair Children’s Hospital and its predecessor hospitals have cared for children of Kentucky, Southern Indiana and throughout the region without regard to their families’ ability to pay. Kosair Children’s Hospital is Kentucky’s only full-service, free-standing pediatric care facility dedicated exclusively to caring for children and is an advocate for the health and well-being of all children. The 263-bed hospital serves as the primary pediatric teaching facility for the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
