(November 7, 2008) – James Spence’s El Caballo held off Jamaludin by a diminishing three-quarters of a length to score a front-running victory in Friday’s featured $50,000 Fund for the Arts Purse at Churchill Downs.

In giving jockey Robby Albarado his meet-leading fifth turf victory of the fall, El Caballo covered the 1 1/16 miles on firm ground in 1:42.81. Trained by Ralph Nicks, El Caballo is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of El Corredor out of the Storm Cat mare Fine Jewel.

El Caballo established a clear lead the first time under the finish line and was tracked by Timeless Fashion in the run down the backstretch. El Caballo disposed of Timeless Fashion at midstretch and then repulsed a late bid by Jamaludin.

El Caballo returned $13.80, $5.80 and $3.60. Jamaludin, ridden by Julien Leparoux, paid $4 and $3, while Timeless Fashion, under Shaun Bridgmohan, finished another 1 ¼ lengths back in third and returned $3.60.

El Caballo has won three of nine career starts and the $31,276 winner’s check boosted his earnings to $126,879.
