Hitechnoweenie Takes Thursday Feature

Peter Callahan’s Hitechnoweenie surged to the front at the head of the stretch en route to a 5 ¼-length victory over favored Pedestrian in the $50,936 feature for fillies and mares on Thursday afternoon at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Ken McPeek and ridden by Robby Albarado, Hitechnoweenie completed the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:45.02.

Hitechnoweenie is a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Harlan’s Holiday out of the Meadow Monster mare Hi Tech Honeycomb. With a record of 6-2-0-1, Hitechnoweenie increased her earnings to $73,122 with Thursday’s $31,200 winner’s check.

Hitechnoweenie returned $14, $6 and $3.40. Pedestrian, ridden by Corey Lanerie, returned $3.20 and $2.60 and finished a nose in front of Tap Twenty One, who paid $2.80 to show under Alan Garcia.

A single day record total of $1,114,065 was bet into the Super Hi-5 on the day’s final race in which bettors are required to pick the top five finishers in order. A total of $303,033 was carried over from Derby Day and another $811,032 was added to the pot Thursday. A late scratch of the No. 1 horse, Star of Kitalpha, resulted in $352,753 in refunds.

The winning combination of 3-9-2-8-5 returned $1,094.80 on a $1 ticket.

The previous record one day Super Hi-5 pool was $1,032,658 on May 6, 2009 that featured a carryover of $251,856.

Racing continues Friday with an 11-race program that begins at 2:45 p.m. (EDT).
