Little Polka Dot Rallies To Take Off-The-Turf Unbridled Sidney

May 14, 2011 Gary Yunt

Maggi Moss’ Little Polka Dot re-rallied in upper stretch to overtake Speedacious and win the $53,210 Unbridled Sidney overnight stake for fillies and mares by 1 ¾ lengths over Jocata on Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Tom Amoss and ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, Little Polka Dot covered the five furlongs on a sloppy main track in :57.34. The race was taken off the Matt Winn Turf Course after a mid-afternoon thunderstorm dumped heavy rain on the historic track.

Little Polka Dot and Wild About Marie hooked up in an early speed duel through a first quarter-mile in :21.61. At the head of the stretch, Well Deserved and favored Speedacious moved at the leaders with Speedacious briefly grabbing the lead.

Little Polka Dot quickly regained command and had more than enough left to hold off Jocata, who rallied along the rail under Calvin Borel and finished 2 ½ lengths in front of Speedacious.

The victory was worth $31,860 to Little Polka Dot, a 5-year-old Louisiana-bred daughter of Orientate out of the Regal Intention mare Silky Oaks. Little Polka Dot raised her overall record to 15-6-1-4 with earnings of $207,999.

Little Polka Dot rewarded her backers with payoffs of $12.60, $6.20 and $3.60. Jocata returned $4 and $2.80 with Speedacious, ridden by Jamie Theriot, paying $3.60 to show. Celadon finished a half-length back in fourth and was followed in order by My New Lady, Hungry Tigress, Wild About Marie, Well Deserved and Ubettorubet.
