Murrill Balancing Life as Jockey and New Father

Sep 29, 2023 Kevin Kerstein

Mitchell Murrill admits the word “sleep” is no longer in his vocabulary as he finds balance in his life between being a jockey and a new father to his son, Hayden.

“It’s been a big change in our life. You’re used to just worrying about yourself but now my son takes priority,” Murrill said. “My wife (Mallorie) and I are adapting to it every day.”

Arguably Murrill’s most memorable win came earlier this meet at Churchill Downs when Fibber won a first-level allowance event and his son was in the winner’s circle for the first time.

“My wife really helps out on days when I’m riding and come out early in the mornings to work horses,” Murrill said. “It’s good to make time for your business but also keep the priority of being a father.”

Hayden Mitchell Murrill was born Aug. 24 and shares his birthday with his father.
