No Future Surprise: 'All Others' Edges Verrazano, Surging Vyjack in Derby Futures 2

Mar 04, 2013 John Asher

The second of three betting pools in Churchill Downs Racetrack’s 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) concluded with few surprises when wagering closed early Sunday evening with a strong favorite in the  “All Others” (#24) betting interest  the strong 3-1 favorite over unbeaten Verrazano (#22), Fountain of Youth (GII) winner Orb (#11) and the surging Vyjack (#23), who made a major move in the pool following Saturday’s impressive win in the Gotham Stakes (GIII) at Aqueduct.

The Mutuel Field, or “All Others”, includes all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses on the Derby Future pool’s 24 wagering interests, was the 3-1 favorite in Churchill Downs’ oddsmaker Mike Battaglia’s morning line odds for Pool 2 and that betting interest has frequently been favored in the first two KDFW pools since the Derby Future bet was introduced in 1999.

The “All Others” wagered hovered in the 3-1 range from the moment betting opened at noon (all times Eastern) on Friday, March 1, until it concluded Sunday evening at 6 p.m.  If a horse other than one of the 23 individuals on the pool’s betting roster should win the 2013 Kentucky Derby, a $2 wager on the #24 in Pool 2 would return $8.60.

Verrazano, one of six Pool 2 betting interests trained by Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, was the second choice in the wagering throughout the pool and closed as the 9-1 individual favorite.  He was also the favored individual at 11-1 in the Feb. 8-10 opening pool of KDFW 2013.  “All Others” was heavy 8-5 betting choice in that three-day pool.

Vyjack was a 30-1 longshot in the Pool 2 morning line, but the odds on trainer Rudy Rodriguez’s unbeaten gelding plummeted after his dazzling come-from-behind win in Saturday’s Gotham.  The son of Into Mischief closed as the 11-1 third betting choice in Pool 2, followed closely by Fountain of Youth (GII) winner Orb (#11, 12-1), Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner Flashback (#6, 12-1), Holy Bull (GIII) winner Itsmyluckyday (#8, 13-1), reigning 2-year-old champion Shanghai Bobby (#17, 16-1) and a duo at 17-1 that included Risen Star (GIII) winner Super Ninety Nine (#18) and Normandy Invasion (#10), a  trouble-plagued fifth  in the  Risen Star.

Kentucky Derby Futures fans wagered $407,039 in Pool 2. Overall betting in the pair of 2013KDFW pools now stands at $1,029,532.  Pool 2 wagering included $287,612 in win betting and $119,427 in exactas, and its overall total was the fourth-largest in Pool 2 since the Kentucky Derby Future Wager was introduced in 1999. A record of $511,655 was wagered in 2005, followed by $464,236 in 2006 and last year’s Pool 2 betting total of $411,368.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager offers racing fans an opportunity to bet on potential contenders for the famed “Run for the Roses” well in advance of the race at odds that could be significantly more attractive than those available in betting on Kentucky Derby Day.

Each Kentucky Derby Future pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, which is available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1-minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the Derby Future Wager, but betting on an individual horse will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby.

The final KDFW pool of 2013 is scheduled for March 22-24.  The $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) will be run for the 139th consecutive year at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4.
