SCONSIN GOES BACK-TO-BACK IN WINNING COLORS
May 30, 2022 Churchill Downs Communications
Lloyd Madison Farm’s Sconsin made her 5-year-old return a winning one with a three-quarters of a length score for her second consecutive victory in the $200,000 Winning Colors (Grade III) at Churchill Downs.
Leading rider Tyler Gaffalione rode Sconsin to victory for trainer Greg Foley and scorched six furlongs in 1:08.11, just 4/100ths off the stakes record set by Dubai Majesty in 2010.
Sconsin broke from post No. 3 and settled in third behind the fleet-footed pacesetter Joyful Cadence and Joe Talamo. Sconsin began her charge at Joyful Cadence around the far turn following early quarter-mile fractions of :22.72 and :44.36. Gaffalione had to ask Sconsin to remain in front inside the eighth pole but was able to get by the tiring leader for her sixth lifetime win.
“She’s an incredible mare,” Foley said. “She wasn’t quite ready Derby week so we gave her the time she needed to make sure she was fit enough to return a winner. We had this spot picked out for a while and she rewarded us.”
The victory was worth $123,500 and boosted the daughter of Include’s earnings to $906,862. Sconsin is out of her owner’s mare Sconnie, who was also campaigned by Foley.
“I’m not sure where we’ll go next but I’m going to keep her fat and happy,” Foley said.
Sconsin was the 1-2 favorite and returned $3, $2.10 and $2.10. Joyful Cadence paid $4.20 and $2.60. Li’l Tootsie closed for third under James Graham and returned $2.80.
Novel Squall finished fourth and was followed by Tipsy Gal. Euphoric was scratched.
Racing returns Thursday at Churchill Downs for the eight-race Twilight Thursday program. First post is 5 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.ChurchilLDowns.com.
WINNING COLORS QUOTES
Greg Foley, trainer of SCONSIN (winner): “She’s an incredible mare. She wasn’t quite ready Derby week so we gave her the time she needed to make sure she was fit enough to return a winner. We had this spot picked out for a while and she rewarded us. I’m not sure where we’ll go next but I’m going to keep her fat and happy. These owners have been with us for a long time and developed a fantastic broodmare program with Sconsin being a part of that.”
Tyler Gaffalione, jockey of SCONSIN (winner): “The race set up how we thought it would. She’s just an incredible mare. I really love riding her. I’ve been joking with Greg for the last month to let me come work her. She’s very special and I’m so happy we were able to get her year kicked off this way again.”
