Share the Upside Tops Competitive Edition of $125,000 Aristides
May 27, 2019
Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings and Windsor Boys Racing’s Hot Springs Stakes runner-up Share the Upside tops a competitive field for the 31st-running of Saturday’s $125,000 Aristides Stakes (Listed) at Churchill Downs.
The six-furlong Aristides, named after the first Kentucky Derby winner in 1875, is the second of two stakes events on Saturday’s 11-race Downs After Dark Presented by Budweiser program. The first race is 6 p.m. (all times Eastern). The Aristides goes as Race 10 at approximately 10:42 p.m. and the fourth running of the $120,000-added Mighty Beau Overnight Stakes, a five-furlong turf sprint, is Race 9 at approximately 10:11 p.m.
Trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Steve Asmussen, Share the Upside (9-4-3-1—$242,672) finished 1 ½ lengths behind multiple Grade I winner Whitmore in the March 9 Hot Springs Stakes. The 4-year-old gelding enters the Aristides off a 1 ½-length victory in a conditioned allowance race at Oaklawn on April 20.
Share the Upside will be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr. and break from post No. 3.
The runner-up finisher in the aforementioned April 20 allowance contest at Oaklawn was Wilbo, who will hope to turn the tables on Share the Upside in the Aristides. Owned by Chris Wilkins, Wilbo (33-10-6-8—$670,030) finished third in last year’s Aristides to Chief Cicatriz and second in the 2017 Aristides behind multiple Grade I winner Limousine Liberal.
Wilbo will have the riding services of Corey Lanerie and break from post 6.
The complete Aristides field from the rail out (with jockeys and trainers): Mr. Crow (Tyler Gaffalione, Ben Colebrook); Control Stake (Miguel Mena, Greg Foley); Share the Upside (Santana, Asmussen); Zipp On By (Edgar Morales, Rey Hernandez); Petrov (Jack Gilligan, Ron Moquett); Wilbo (Lanerie, Hartman); and Kowboy Karma (Gabriel Saez, Larry Jones).
All horses will tote 120 pounds with the exception of Kowboy Karma, who will carry 122 lbs.
Churchill Downs admission gates will open Saturday at 5 p.m. General Admission is $12, reserved seating is $27 and reserved dining packages are $69. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at ChurchillDowns.com/Tickets.
The theme for Saturday night’s Downs After Dark is a celebration of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary with “Peace, Love & Horse Racing” and guests are encouraged to wear tie-dye. Entertainment will feature Chicago-based jam band Mr. Blotto with original and classic 60s tunes, local DJ Matt Anthony, a retro fashion contest and more.
Churchill Downs will have a four-day week of racing (with first race post time, number of races): Thursday (5 p.m., 8 races), Friday (12:45 p.m., 9 races), Saturday (6 p.m., 11 races) and Sunday (12:45 p.m., 10 races).
The Twilight Thursday presented by Blue Moon abbreviated eight-race program is highlighted by $1 canned domestic beers, $3 Blue Moon drafts, food trucks, live music on the Plaza stages by band Justin Paul Lewis.
